How the Site Works

There are two ways to learn how this site works. The hard way is to muddle through it, clicking around and noticing patterns until they seem to make sense and you’ve got a handle on what’s happening, periodically stumbling as you iron out those last few hiccups until you’ve reached full mastery of the slightly unconventional setup.

I lied. There’s a third way: if you’re a text person, here’s a simple description: the front page shows the most recent piece in any given debate. The piece appearing atop is the latest salvo in whatever debate begun most recently. Farther down, in smaller boxes, you see the latest piece in debates started earlier, but possibly still ongoing.

If you click on the name of the debate (e.g. What’s Wrong With the Internet: I), you’ll be taken to an identically styled page, which shows you all the pieces in that debate, in the order they were written. So the lead essay appears on top, while later dissents and concurrences follow in the lower boxes. Savvy?
